The last meal comment caught Spike’s attention.

What the fuck’s he thinking?

Spike had been calculating how he could manipulate Case when the “last meal” comment was made. He figured Case had a bit of a hero complex, and he was trying to think of how he could use that to his advantage. The woman with Case was harder to read. Spike couldn’t tell if she was here because she was Case’s girlfriend or if she was just a friend. At first, he’d thought she was the girlfriend, but from the way Case treated her, she seemed more like a colleague, though maybe there was more there. Spike figured he would eventually find an angle on her, if he needed it. He was confident in his ability to manipulate people and situations.

Never been in a room yet where I wasn’t the smartest guy there.

For now, he was formulating a plan to keep Case from turning him over to the police. Spike was sure that, after attacking a cop, he wouldn’t do well in police custody.

“So, Spike, why’d you break into my house?” Case asked.

Spike knew he had a wide, disarming grin on his face as he answered, “The old lady you have here, she saw something, and I just can’t have her tattling on me.” Spike was taking a calculated risk. He figured that if he started with the truth, he could lead Case to where he wanted him.

“What were you planning on doing with her?” Trish asked.

“I just wanted to make sure she didn’t tell anyone stories that she should keep to herself.” Spike didn’t want the information to come out too quickly. That might make them suspicious, so he had to play hard to get, at least for a little bit. He wanted to taunt them if he could, let them see how much he liked to kill, but he knew he had to hold back. He had to be likable and give them what they wanted.
